This has 3 great supporting characters, Dehner, Conreid, and I think this
is Oakland's funniest Kolchak-role ("Carl, whats wrong with your life?"). After seeing this, I'll never pay anyone for a geneology study.Cmacnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3061398142362448372.post-23721969012107322802012-01-30T21:27:22.672-08:002012-01-30T21:27:22.672-08:00This is one of my favorite episodes mainly because...This is one of my favorite episodes mainly because of the wit and humor as shown in the characters played by John Dehner and Hans Conried.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3061398142362448372.post-34599172498154043382012-01-30T16:37:12.973-08:002012-01-30T16:37:12.973-08:00"Between Conried and Dehner, we can forgive t..."Between Conried and Dehner, we can forgive the lack of classic bits between McGavin and Oakland in this outing."

You know, I agree with this; generally, my favorite parts of the eps are the scenes between Carl and Tony, but this ep was low in that department--but had awesome guest stars. I love Hans Conried from his one-episode role as Major Bonaccelli from Hogan's Heroes. And John Dehner is... well, John Dehner.

I also found Captain Rausch very intriguing as a character, if for no other reason that Carl actually seemed afraid of him---and not that you could blame him, either, seeing how blasé Rausch was about using brutal questioning tactics on him. A character like that had potential to return, and I do wish he had...

--Crystal RoseRose and Ladybughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15412069053453355849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3061398142362448372.post-5903769582462417062012-01-30T10:32:41.367-08:002012-01-30T10:32:41.367-08:00How did our beloved Hans miss becoming a Bat-villa...How did our beloved Hans miss becoming a Bat-villain? As with Victor Buono, Conried's unique inflections and line readings would have been hilarious, and there's no doubt Dr. Terwilliker would have been channelled for such a performance. Again, in that same parallel world...

To prevent an international incident, Nelson and Crane must transport an ancient suit of medieval armor to its rightful home in England. But aboard the Seaview in the dead of night... It really would have been great if, like Wynn's Siska, John Dehner's police captain had returned for another episode (although we're quickly running out of them at this point!).grgstv338https://www.blogger.com/profile/03532739459643834686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3061398142362448372.post-87748010437053029562012-01-30T06:18:56.486-08:002012-01-30T06:18:56.486-08:00I liked this episode better than I remembered (des...I liked this episode better than I remembered (despite the fact that the monster was kinda silly), and for several reasons. Dehner was certainly, uh, chief among them, a fascinating character and such a departure from his predecessors.

Able support from Conried (in fine form) and Dressler sure didn't hurt. Trivia note: Among Conried's few leads was in THE TWONKY, an SF film adapted by Arch (LIGHTS OUT) Oboler from the short story by "Lewis Padgett," a pseudonym for Henry Kuttner--to whom Matheson dedicated I AM LEGEND--and his wife, C.L. Moore. Conried also had a supporting role in a fun minor genre film, THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD.

I also liked it that for once, instead of happening upon the scenes of the crimes after the fact and only confronting the monster at the end, Carl was right there when Minerva got killed. Ironically, of course, despite being an eyewitness to a murder, he is disbelieved.

Your comment about the episode's educational value, tongue in cheek though it may have been, was, er, on target: this is probably where I learned that the ammunition fired from a crossbow is called a bolt, and not an arrow. Hey, I'll admit it--for a long time, all I knew about classical music, I learned from Bugs Bunny cartoons like the sublime RHAPSODY RABBIT and RABBIT OF SEVILLE. (I was never as big a fan of WHAT'S OPERA, DOC? as some.)

Gotta agree about that sadly typical ending, though.Matthew Bradleyhttp://bradleyonfilm.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3061398142362448372.post-46341500393018580822012-01-30T06:14:38.010-08:002012-01-30T06:14:38.010-08:00My vote goes to Hans Conried as the single best on...My vote goes to Hans Conried as the single best one-off bit part of the entire series.
